At the end of last April, we drove out to Kananaskis and into the rocky mountains (my favourite) to take these engagement photos of my brother in law and his fiancé. Next weekend they are getting married in Cardston, AB and we couldn’t be more excited for them! Love you guys!!! xo

It was a pleasure to step into the studio of Woodlot located in Vancouver, BC. As I approached the doors, I could already smell so many lovely fragrances that lingered in the air. Not quite being able to pinpoint an exact one as they seemed to all be intertwined with one another which made it even more lovely. I’m only guessing, but it may have been clove, or maybe cedarwood or perhaps a bit of vanilla swirled with the sweet scent of orange. It’s funny how scents can bring us back into certain moments in our lives and the products of Woodlot do just that. With each scent rolling into the next, each memory attached is replayed and accompanied with a feeling of warmth and gratitude. Trying to grasp onto the essence of vanilla (my favourite), I was reminded of Nathan and the kids making a birthday cake for me one year. As the kids seemed to be robustly stirring and whisking and sprinkling flour on top of one another, Nathan was ever so gently scraping a vanilla bean. “Only the best” as he shot a wink at me. And he was right. I had no idea what a difference it would make against its lesser counterpart, store bought (good riddance) extract.

Sonia, the lovely co-founder of Woodlot greeted me at the door. I had heard a bit about Sonia prior to meeting her, about how lovely and beautiful she is. But she definitely went beyond those expectations because she is also incredibly sweet, attentive and so genuine. She introduced me to her partner Fouad and although I spent most of my time chatting with her, I am certain that he mirrors these very qualities. She so eloquently and passionately shared with me their process of how they make their candles, their thoughtful ingredients used in their soap bars and their overall vision and outlook. And after leaving their studio, I left with a simple admiration of this couple who pursued their dreams and a gratitude for the fragrances of their products that found a distant memory of mine that may have not been awakened otherwise.

With love,
Maria
